The skeleton in the wrong grave

C1 Lịch sử 285 từ · đọc khoảng 1 phút

A skeleton excavated in 1904 was identified from a grave marker, catalogued, and used for a century as a reference point for the diet of a particular region. Isotope analysis in 2009 showed the individual had grown up four hundred kilometres away.

The mistake was not in the measurement. It was in the chain between the object and its label, and that chain is where most archaeological error lives. The grave marker was contemporary with the burial but had been reset in the nineteenth century during a church restoration; the excavation notes mention this in one line; and the catalogue entry, written forty years later from the notes, does not. Each step was reasonable and the information was lost between steps rather than inside any of them.

This is why provenance documentation is treated as part of the evidence rather than as administration. An object's scientific value depends on what is known about where it was found and how that knowledge was established, and a precise measurement attached to an uncertain context is less useful than a crude measurement attached to a secure one. Museums now record the uncertainty explicitly: not 'from the churchyard' but 'from a grave whose marker was reset at an unknown date'.

The correction had a second effect that mattered more than the first. Because the individual had been used as a regional reference, every study citing that baseline had to be re-examined, and two conclusions about regional trade changed. A single mislabelled object had propagated into a literature for a hundred years, which is an argument for recording doubt even when it feels pedantic.

The 1904 excavator, it turns out, had written the doubt down. Nobody had carried it forward.
