The practice test that came first

B2+ Giáo dục 280 từ · đọc khoảng 1 phút

A class sat a test on material they had not been taught. They scored almost nothing, and then learned the material faster than a class that had been taught it first.

The effect has a name — the pretesting effect — and it is reliable enough to be used deliberately. Attempting a question you cannot answer does several things at once. It establishes what the question is, so the explanation that follows has somewhere to land. It generates an error, and a corrected error is remembered better than a fact that never had a competitor. And it reveals the shape of the topic: after a failed test, a student knows which parts they had no idea about, which is information no amount of reading supplies.

There are two conditions. Feedback must follow fairly soon, because an uncorrected guess can persist; and the test must be presented as a tool rather than an assessment, since a score of two per cent recorded in a mark book teaches a different lesson entirely.

The effect is counter-intuitive enough that students resist it, and the resistance is informative. Failing a test before learning feels like wasted time and like evidence of inadequacy. Both feelings are wrong in the same way: they treat the test as a measurement, when in this design it is an instruction. The score is not the output. The experience of not knowing, in a specific place, is the output.

Teachers who use it tend to use a short version: four questions, three minutes, no marks recorded, immediately before the lesson that answers them. The gain is largest where the material is counter-intuitive, which is also where ordinary teaching struggles most.
