Why nobody asks a question

B2 Giáo dục 254 từ · đọc khoảng 1 phút

At the end of an explanation a teacher asks whether anyone has a question. Thirty students look at their desks. The teacher moves on, and half the class is still lost.

This happens in every country and it has little to do with laziness. Asking a question in front of thirty people requires admitting, publicly, that you did not understand something that everyone else has apparently understood. The cost is social and it is paid immediately. The benefit is educational and it arrives later, which is exactly the wrong way round for a fourteen-year-old.

There is a second problem, less obvious. Students who are badly lost often cannot form a question at all. A good question requires knowing roughly where your understanding stopped. If the whole explanation went past in a blur, there is nothing to point at, and 'I don't understand any of it' feels too shameful to say.

Teachers who get around this tend to change the shape of the asking rather than encourage harder. They collect written questions on paper with no names. They ask students to compare answers in pairs first, so that a question becomes 'we are not sure' instead of 'I am not sure'. They ask a specific question back — 'which step lost you, the second or the third?' — which turns an impossible request into a choice between two options.

None of these methods makes students braver. They simply lower the price of admitting confusion, and it turns out that the price was the whole problem.
