What a queue teaches

B2 Kinh tế 256 từ · đọc khoảng 1 phút

A queue is a small economy. It has a scarce resource, a rule for sharing it, and people who respond to incentives. Watching one carefully teaches more about systems than a chapter of theory.

At the FitForm station the scarce resource is time: one tablet, fifteen minutes of break, perhaps forty students who might want a turn. Three different rules were tried in the first month, and each produced different behaviour.

The first rule was simply first come, first served. The result was a sprint from the classroom door, which teachers disliked for obvious reasons, and the same quick students every day.

The second rule was a sign-up sheet. This was fairer but slower: students forgot their slot, the sheet filled up with names that never arrived, and the tablet stood idle while a queue waited beside it.

The third rule worked best. Each class gets the station for a fixed ten minutes on a published timetable. Inside those ten minutes, order does not matter much, because everyone who turns up gets a turn. Idle time fell to almost nothing, the sprinting stopped, and the number of different students using the station each week rose by half.

The lesson is not that timetables are magic. It is that the rule shapes the behaviour. If you want more students to take part, do not tell them to be fair; design a system in which taking part is easy and waiting is short. Economists call this mechanism design. A school hall is a good place to practise it.
