The team that talked last

B2 Tâm lý 264 từ · đọc khoảng 1 phút

A research group at Google spent two years trying to find what made some teams work better than others. They expected to find patterns in who was on the team: the most able people, the most experienced, the best mix of skills. They found almost nothing there.

What did separate the strong teams was how the conversation was distributed. In effective teams, across a meeting, people spoke in roughly equal amounts. It did not have to be equal in every exchange — someone with the relevant knowledge naturally dominated a particular question — but by the end nobody had been silent. In weaker teams one or two voices took most of the time, and the researchers found that the quiet members' knowledge simply never entered the room.

The second finding was related. Members of strong teams were unusually good at reading how others were feeling from faces and tone, which sounds soft until you consider what it does: it tells you when someone has an objection they have not said yet.

The researchers gave the underlying quality a name borrowed from earlier work: psychological safety, meaning a shared belief that you can say something half-formed or admit a mistake without it being held against you. It is not comfort, and it is not agreement. Teams with it argued more, not less. The difference was that the argument was about the work.

For a group project at school the practical version is short. Watch the airtime. If one person has not spoken in ten minutes, the team is probably not using what that person knows.
