The tax records that became history

C1 Lịch sử 284 từ · đọc khoảng 1 phút

Almost everything known about ordinary life in many pre-modern societies comes from documents written to collect money.

This is a sampling problem of the most severe kind. Tax registers record what the state could see and wanted to count: households liable for payment, land under a recognised form of tenure, trades that fell inside a guild. They do not record what was invisible to assessment. Work done by women inside a household, exchange that happened without currency, people moving between districts, and anything deliberately hidden all leave no trace, or leave a trace only when an official complained about their absence.

Historians therefore read these sources against the grain. An entry noting that a village 'cannot be assessed as before' is evidence of something, though not of what the writer meant; a series of fines for an activity is evidence that the activity continued. Marginal notes, crossings-out and the complaints of collectors carry more information per line than the figures do, because the figures record the state's conclusion and the margins record the resistance it met.

The risk is a specific kind of circularity. If the only evidence for how much land was cultivated is the taxable area, then a fall in the record can be read as a fall in farming, an improvement in evasion, a change in the definition of taxable land, or the loss of a page. Choosing between these requires evidence from outside the tax system, which is exactly what is scarce.

This is why archaeological and environmental records matter so much to economic history. Pollen cores and settlement surveys are not better than documents. They are independent of them, and independence is the only thing that breaks a circle.
