Thinking in the other language

B2+ Tâm lý 247 từ · đọc khoảng 1 phút

A curious finding has been replicated several times. People make more consistent decisions about risk when thinking in a second language than in their first.

The experiments present the same choice twice, framed once as a gain and once as a loss. In their native language most people flip, preferring the safe option when outcomes are described as lives saved and the risky one when described as lives lost. In a second language the flip is much smaller, and in some studies it disappears.

The explanation researchers favour is emotional distance. A first language carries associations built since childhood, and the words arrive with feeling attached. A second language learned in a classroom carries far less, so the same sentence lands as information rather than as something felt. With less emotional weight on the framing, the underlying numbers get more attention.

There is a cost alongside the benefit, and it is rarely mentioned. The same distance that reduces bias also reduces moral intensity: people judge the same action less harshly in a second language, and are more willing to accept a decision that harms one person to help several. Whether that is better judgement or merely colder judgement is not a question the experiments can settle.

For a learner there is a practical use that does not require resolving it. If a decision feels obvious and you cannot say why, writing it out in your weaker language slows the process down enough for the reasons to appear.
