The promise of the blank page

Ask a student why an essay has not been started and the answer is rarely laziness. It is more often that starting feels dangerous, and the danger is specific: as long as nothing is written, the essay in the mind remains excellent.

This is a recognisable pattern. An unwritten piece of work has no flaws, because it has no sentences. The first paragraph you actually produce will be worse than the one you imagined, necessarily, because imagined work is not made of words and real work is. Writing therefore begins with a loss — the exchange of a perfect imaginary essay for a mediocre real one — and that loss is paid immediately while the benefit of having started arrives much later.

Psychologists describe something close to this under several names, but the mechanism students report is simpler than any of them. The longer the delay continues, the higher the standard the first sentence must meet, because it now has to justify all the time spent not writing it. By the third evening the opening line is carrying an impossible load.

The techniques that work all attack the same point: they make the first output officially not count. Write the worst possible opening on purpose. Write the middle instead and leave a gap. Explain the argument aloud to someone and write down what you said. Each one removes the requirement that the first thing produced be good.

None of this makes writing pleasant. It makes starting survivable, which is the only part that was ever blocked.
