The price of attention

C1 Kinh tế 295 từ · đọc khoảng 1 phút

A service that costs nothing still has a price, and in the case of most apps the price is attention. Understanding how that market works is more useful to a teenager than any advice about screen time.

The business model is simple to state. A platform gathers users, measures what holds them, and sells access to those users to advertisers. The product being sold is not the app; it is the predictable attention of the people using it. Everything else follows from this, including design choices that look strange until you know what is being optimised.

Consider the infinite scroll. A page with numbered results gives a natural stopping point, and stopping points reduce time on the platform. Remove the page break and the decision to stop must come from the user, who is tired and has no obvious moment to choose. Consider also the variable reward: notifications that arrive unpredictably produce stronger habits than notifications on a fixed schedule, a finding borrowed from animal learning research in the 1950s.

None of this makes the engineers villains. They are responding to a measurement: time on platform, sessions per day, return rate. The same mechanism that produces compulsive scrolling would, if pointed at a different target, produce something else entirely. A system that measured whether users reported feeling better at the end of the week would be designed differently, and would probably be less profitable.

The practical response is not to despise the technology but to change your position in the market. Notifications off by default, so arrival time is yours. A visible end point for any session — a playlist that finishes, a page that ends. And a weekly glance at where the hours actually went, since nobody defends a budget they never look at.
