The notebook and the keyboard

B2 Giáo dục 255 từ · đọc khoảng 1 phút

Students taking notes on a laptop write more words than students taking notes by hand. On tests of factual recall shortly afterwards the two groups perform similarly. On questions requiring the material to be applied to something new, the handwriting group has repeatedly scored higher.

The explanation researchers offer is about the gap between listening speed and writing speed. Typing is fast enough to transcribe. Handwriting is not, so the writer must decide, continuously, what is worth keeping. That decision is a small act of processing, repeated a hundred times across a lesson, and the processing is where the learning happens. Verbatim notes contain more of the lesson and less of the thinking about it.

The finding is sometimes reported as proof that laptops are harmful, which overstates it. Studies that instructed laptop users not to transcribe found the gap narrowed, though it did not close, and the instruction is hard to follow because typing fast is the obvious thing to do when typing is available.

There is also a cost on the other side that gets less attention. Handwritten notes are harder to search, harder to share, and inaccessible to students who cannot write quickly for physical reasons.

The practical conclusion is narrower than either camp usually states. The benefit comes from summarising rather than from the pen, and a student typing in their own words, deliberately writing less than they hear, gets most of it. The method matters because of what it forces, and any method that forces the same thing will do.
