The museum with one object

B2+ Nghệ thuật 266 từ · đọc khoảng 1 phút

A small museum tried an experiment. For one month it displayed a single object in an otherwise empty room: a wooden chair, four hundred years old, with a repaired leg.

Visitor numbers fell by a third. Time spent in the building tripled. The average visit went from eleven minutes to thirty-four, and the comment book filled with observations that staff had never seen before: the wear on the left arm, the different colour of the repair, the height, which is lower than a modern chair because people were shorter and because sitting upright was a posture of respect.

None of this information was new. It had all been on a label in the previous display, where the chair stood among sixty other objects and was looked at for an average of four seconds. The experiment did not add anything. It removed the competition.

Curators describe the problem as a budget rather than a failure of attention. A visitor arrives with a fixed amount of looking and divides it among whatever is presented. Sixty objects in a room do not receive sixty times the attention of one; they receive the same total, cut into pieces too small for anything to register. The crowded room feels generous and delivers less.

The museum did not keep the one-object format, which would be unaffordable and, after a few months, a different kind of gimmick. It did reduce the number of objects in each room by about half and widened the gaps between them. Attendance recovered. The comment book stayed interesting, which is the measure the staff decided to care about.
