The loan word that came home

C1 Chuyện của từ 280 từ · đọc khoảng 1 phút

English borrowed a word from Japanese, changed its meaning, and lent it back. Japanese now has two forms of the same word with different senses, one of them a record of an English misunderstanding.

Round trips of this kind are commoner than they look, and they leave a usable trace. 'Animation' shortened to 'anime' in Japanese, re-entered English with the narrower sense of Japanese animation specifically, and that narrower sense is now also available in Japanese when speakers want to distinguish the domestic product from animation in general. Nobody planned any of this; each step was a local solution to a local need.

Linguists call the pattern re-borrowing, and the reason it matters for a learner is that it breaks a comfortable assumption. A word that exists in two languages with a shared origin is usually treated as a friend, and the usual warning is about false friends, where the senses have drifted apart. Re-borrowed words are a third category: the senses are related, both are correct, and which one applies depends on which journey the word has been on in the language you are speaking.

The practical consequence is that etymology is a poor guide to current meaning and a good guide to current confusion. Knowing that two words share an ancestor tells you nothing about whether they mean the same thing now; it tells you exactly where a misunderstanding is likely.

For a learner, then, the useful habit is to treat a familiar-looking word as a question rather than an answer. Shared origin is a reason to check, not a reason to relax, and the check takes one line in a corpus or one question to a speaker.
