The colour of the package

B2+ Kinh tế 236 từ · đọc khoảng 1 phút

Two identical products sit on a shelf. One sells twice as well. Frequently the difference is nothing to do with the product.

Research on packaging finds effects that feel absurd and replicate reliably. A heavier container makes the contents taste better in blind comparisons. A darker label makes coffee seem stronger. Rounder lettering makes a food seem sweeter. None of these facts is about the food; they are about expectation, and expectation changes perception rather than merely reporting it.

This is not simply a trick. The same mechanism makes a warm room feel warmer when the walls are painted orange, and makes a medicine work slightly better when the patient believes it will. Expectation is part of experience rather than a layer on top of it, which is why it cannot be removed by being told about it.

For a shopper, the practical consequence is narrow but real. Comparing two products while looking at them is comparing packages. The only way to compare the contents is to compare them without seeing which is which, and almost nobody does this because it is tedious and feels unnecessary.

There is a wider version for anyone making something. Presentation is not separate from quality in the experience of the person receiving it. That is uncomfortable for people who believe the work should speak for itself, and it is nonetheless how perception works, in a shop and in an essay.
