Learning a sport at fifteen

B1 Thể thao 217 từ · đọc khoảng 1 phút

There is a quiet belief among teenagers that if you have not started a sport by about ten, it is too late. Coaches hear it constantly, and it is wrong in an interesting way.

It is true that some things are easier early. Balance, certain swimming movements and the fine control used in gymnastics are learned faster by young children. But most of what makes someone good at a sport at school level is not in that category. Fitness, strength, tactical understanding and the ability to stay calm under pressure all improve at fifteen as readily as at nine, and some of them improve faster, because an older learner can understand an explanation.

There is also a practical advantage that nobody mentions. A beginner at fifteen is choosing the sport. A beginner at seven was usually taken to it. People who choose tend to keep going, and keeping going is almost the whole of getting good.

The real obstacle is not the body. It is standing next to someone who started eight years earlier and feeling ridiculous. That feeling is unpleasant and it is also temporary, and the only way through it is the boring one: show up for a season and compare yourself with who you were in September, not with the person next to you.
