Attention is a limited resource

C1 Tâm lý 359 từ · đọc khoảng 2 phút

Students are often told to concentrate, as though attention were a decision rather than a resource. Research of the last forty years suggests the opposite. Attention behaves like a narrow channel: a small amount of information passes through at any moment, and what passes is selected before you are aware of choosing.

The classic demonstration is simple. Ask people to count passes in a basketball video and a surprising number fail to notice a person in a gorilla suit walking through the scene. The effect, called inattentional blindness, is not stupidity. It is the normal cost of focusing: to follow one stream you must suppress others, and suppression is not free.

This explains why multitasking disappoints. When students say they are studying while messaging, measurement shows rapid switching rather than parallel work, and each switch carries a cost in time and accuracy. The cost is largest exactly where it hurts most — in tasks that require holding several ideas together, such as solving a multi-step problem or writing an argument.

Two further findings matter for anyone planning a study routine. First, attention declines with sustained effort but recovers with short breaks, especially breaks involving movement rather than a different screen. Second, the environment does a great deal of the work that willpower is credited with. A phone face-down in another room produces better results than the same phone beside the notebook, even when it never makes a sound, because resisting it consumes the very resource you are trying to protect.

Some caution is required about the research itself. Many studies are small, use university students, and measure performance in laboratory tasks that look nothing like homework. Effect sizes are usually modest. The common claim that a single interruption costs twenty-three minutes of focus comes from one study and has been repeated far beyond what it can support.

What survives this caution is still useful, and it is practical rather than motivational. Work in protected blocks. Remove the thing you would have to resist. Break with your body, not with a feed. And treat attention the way an athlete treats energy: something to be budgeted, not something to be demanded.
